On 1st March, 1917, after having spent two weeks in training at Robecq, the 1st East Kent (Buffs) battalion of 16 Brigade, 6th Division, moved into the line at Loos where they were to spend the next month either in the front line trenches or in support and reserve positions. As was the case all the way along the line, there was an ever present danger to life and limb from shell fire, snipers and trench mortars, added to which were the perils of night time patrols. Over the month the casualties mounted up. One of these was Alfred Twelftree who was killed on 31st March. |
